Smart Education to bridge the gap
With the prevailing situation in the country, one of the major sectors that has been affected is the education. With the low attendance rates as a result of the fear in parents about the safety of their children, one of the major issues faced by the schools has been on how to complete their syllabuses for the term and teachers have faced issues in how to reach out and contact their students.
Another issue that has been arised due to this is that the government has prohibited the schools from conducting after school classes due to security concerns raising another question to teachers on how to cover the syllabus for the term.
Presbyterian Girls’ School is a government school which is located on the station road Dehiwala, found a solution by using Headstart Learning Management System that was given to them through the Smart School program.
With the support of the principal and the ambassador teachers, the school thought of uploading study packs and lesson contents to the LMS so that the students could access their materials from the safety of their homes. Here the teachers were asked to create contents related to their subjects and obtain the support from the ambassador teaches to create their courses and upload the contents. One of the ambassador teachers Mrs Dilrukshini De Livera previously used the system successfully for her A/L students in providing them with notes and study materials through the LMS on the days that she was unable to attend to school.
Mrs.Livera also made sure to upload contents related to her subject so that whenever a student was absent, she would not miss out on what was taught that day. With this
experience, Mrs Livera and the other ambassador teachers Mrs Ragitha Geeganage and Mrs Thishara Ariyarathna, other teachers in the school are being guided on how to use the Headstart Learning Management System effectively and reach out to their students.

This has given the staff an opportunity to reach out to the students during this critical time period.

Students continue their studies at the computer lab during their free periods.
